Cross-Border QR Codes Take Hold Across Southeast Asia
Cross-border payment interoperability is making tourism and digital trade easier, cutting out costly currency conversion middlemen.
Payment system connectivity in Southeast Asia has reached a new milestone with the integration of cross-border QR codes such as QRIS, DuitNow and PromptPay. Consumers can now pay directly overseas using their local banking apps.
The system removes the need to change cash at airports and cuts the administration fees on international credit cards that often weigh on small businesses and travellers.
The Local Currency Settlement infrastructure, which clears transactions directly between local currencies, strengthens the region's economic resilience against global foreign-exchange volatility.
The initiative's success has become a global benchmark for inclusive, efficient digital financial inclusion.
