Running a web application with thousands of daily visitors on shared hosting often runs into the limits of allocated RAM and database disk I/O. An inefficiently written query can bring the entire service down without warning.
The key to database performance is a well-targeted composite index. Columns used in WHERE clauses, ORDER BY, and status filters should be covered by a single combined index to avoid filesort operations on disk.
Also avoid TEXT columns for short values, and always use the smallest integer type that fits. Regularly checking the slow query log and analysing execution plans with EXPLAIN will surface hidden bottlenecks.
